Activities
Assist communities to establish Youth Justice Committees:
- Inform communities about the opportunity to form a Youth Justice Committees in their area through presentations to Board meetings, community meetings, school meetings; newsletter articles, resource fairs; and through community workers, Calgary Police Community Liaison officers, etc.
- Identify community members to form a steering committee for their area.
- Assist steering committee in the process of establishing a Youth Justice Committee, including the development of a Constitution, volunteer recruitment, gathering community support and initial training.
- Facilitate training for new volunteers
- Maintain ongoing training opportunities for current volunteers.
- Provide a forum for Youth Justice Committees of Calgary and area to communicate with each other and share ideas. This is done through regular newsletters, maintenance of a website, conferences, workshops, guest speakers, volunteer recognition events.
- Identify and provide needed resources for Youth Justice Committees. An example of such resources are a Resource Binder for new Committees, a Youth Justice Committee Toolkit which holds a compilation of all of the tools created by Youth Justice Committees in Calgary and area, pamphlets, training video, business cards and letterhead for the Committees, tri-fold table-top display, etc.
- Be a contact person for public inquiries, the justice system, community agencies, and Youth Justice Committee members.
- Seek additional funding to assist with the costs of training programs and activities of Youth Justice Committees.
- Maintain partnerships with similar organizations and be informed of current events and research.
