Our Successes
Since 1998, Calgary Youth Justice Committee volunteers have been providing an alternative to court for young people who have committed a less serious crime. Over the last eleven years nearly 9,000 youth have been supported by their community in accepting responsibility for their behaviour, setting them on paths to making better decisions in the future.
90% of the youth complete the program successfully.3 years later, 80% have not been charged again.
The Calgary Youth Justice Society has facilitated the development of 25 Youth Justice Committees serving over 180 Calgary communities. Each year, 300 volunteers contribute over 10,000 hours of their own time towards this worthwhile program.
In 2007, 116 volunteers were recognised for 5 or more years of service. Why do they stay? Because they see the results - that what they are doing is making a difference.
"Most times we get the feeling that our connection with a young person could have some lasting, positive impact. Then there are the gems, the experiences that are truly beautiful, that shine upon you and say, 'this is why I'm here!'"
"I recently had the opportunity to speak personally with one of the boys this fall about his experience with the Youth Justice Committee - He remains deeply embarrassed by the incident, however feels supported by his community and has learned a lot through this experience."
"The panel was very confident that Peter would not come before another panel. As a final note, Peter's dad expressed interest in joining our Youth Justice Committee."
