There are two different volunteer opportunities available.
1. Volunteer for the Board of Directors of the Society
The Calgary Youth Justice Society has a Board of Directors consisting of 9 Board members. The Board of Directors oversees the direction of the Society and makes decisions that impact the Society as a whole. The positions are for a two-yr. term, and new Board Members are elected in open positions annually at the Annual General Meeting. There are also opportunities throughout the year to assist with the work of various sub-committees within the Board. For more information, please call the Society.
2. Volunteering for a Youth Justice Committee. Some common questions:
What skills do I require?
Youth Justice Committee volunteers do not require any special skills. In
fact, the greatest asset a volunteer can share is their common sense, past
life experience, and a commitment to the purpose of this initiative.
Is there training provided?
There are two evenings of training provided by Alberta Justice and the
Calgary Youth Justice Society. Volunteers are also required to undergo a
Criminal Record Check and an Oath of Confidentiality.
What coverage do I have?
Youth Justice Committee members are considered to be volunteers of the
Provincial Government and are covered for liability insurance and some
benefits, if injured while performing volunteer duties.
How much time will I need to invest?
The time commitment will vary depending on several factors: what position
you will undertake, how many volunteers are on the committee and how many
cases the youth justice committee is working with at a given time. The
committees usually meet in the evenings, and the time required of you would
be flexible.
What will I gain from the experience?
Volunteering for a Youth Justice Committee can be a very valuable and
rewarding experience. Your experience will leave you with enhanced
interviewing skills, the ability to work with within a team, increased
knowledge of our criminal justice system, a better understanding of youth in
your community, and a feeling of satisfaction knowing that you have made a
difference.
I am interested in volunteering. Where do I get more information?
First, check the map below to see if there is a Youth Justice Committee in your area. If you live in a community that has a committee,
contact the Calgary Youth Justice Society to get more information about who to call to get involved in your area. If there is not a Youth Justice
Committee currently operating in your community, click here for more information one started.
